INSTITUTO SUPERIOR TECNICO (IST) is the Engineering School of the University of Lisbon, which is committed to education and research in various areas of engineering and technology.  It has an academic staff of approximately 1000, about 11000 undergraduate and master students and 1000 PhD students.  The Centre for Marine Technology and Ocean Engineering is the Research Unit of Instituto Superior Técnico that will be participating in this project.

The Research Unit from IST that will be involved in this project is the Centre for Marine Technology and Ocean Engineering (CENTEC). The Research Unit develops its research activity within the general research areas of Mechanical Engineering & Engineering Systems and of Marine Science & Technology as they are defined by the Portuguese Foundation for Science and Technology (FCT). In the nationwide evaluation of the performance of research centres promoted by FCT, CENTEC was classified as EXCELLENT.

CENTEC aims at continuing to be one of the world's leading research centres in the area of Marine Technology and Ocean Engineering, specifically in the subject areas of Marine Environment, Marine Dynamics and Hydrodynamics, Marine Structures and Safety and Logistics of Maritime Transportation, which corresponds to the four research groups in which it is organized. In all those areas, the work of CENTEC has an important content of uncertainty modelling and risk assessment.

CENTEC has total research personnel around 100, amongst which, there are more than 40 persons at PhD. Level and has been involved in about 100 European projects and 50 National projects, since early 1990’s.
